Technology and Teenagers in Tomorrow’s World

Technology and Teenagers in Tomorrow’s World

2016 has undoubtedly been a year of unprecedented change across the globe.  Accelerations in technology, the environment and geopolitics are reshaping all aspects of our day to day lives, from small villages to major cities.  As parents and educators, many of us are now wondering what the future holds for our students and our children.

At ISSFT, we have the unique privilege of spending time with young people from all over the world.  We are constantly overwhelmed by their sheer creativity, ingenuity and goodwill. When our students are given the opportunity to come up with new ideas and work as a team, they often reshape they way we think about things and we are left envisioning a different but positive vision of the future.    For this reason, we are delighted to be launching a brand new elective called Creative Coding.

No one can deny that we are firmly living in the digital age and as such many of tomorrow’s jobs will be technology related in some shape or form.  As such, programming will become as basic and as fundamental as literacy.   Our teenagers are already proficient in social media and using their phones but ISSFT creative coding is designed to give students the understanding of where this technology comes from and how it is developed.

As John E. Kelly IIII,  Senior vice president of IBM Cognitive Solutions and Research stated: “in the 21st century knowing all the answers won’t distinguish someone’s intelligence — rather the ability to ask all the right questions will be the mark of true genius.”  Critical analysis, communication skills and understanding have never been more important.

The late historian William H. McNeil was once asked what drives history forward more than any other factor?  His response was that “the ultimate spring of human variability, of course, lies in our capacity to invent new ideas, practices and institutions.  But invention also flourished best when contacts with strangers compelled different ways of thinking.”

There are 1.8 billion young people in the world today making up a quarter of the entire population.  It’s time to invest in our young people AND to believe in them too.  Change is undoubtedly on its way, but by working together and understanding the world around us, the future can be bright for us all.

The 21st century is all about technology and at ISSFT, we are proud to help foster the next generation of coders, innovators and leaders.
